FAQ

What is the difference between parachuting and parasailing?

Para-gliding involves using a harness that is attached to a small sailing sail to fly above the earth. You can fly with the harness. It will keep you safe when you are falling through the sky.

You don't need any equipment to fly. Simply attach your body to the sail. Then, you can take off. As you ascend, the wind pushes against your sail. This helps to lift your spirits.

You keep moving forward, as you glide along ground. Your momentum carries you forward until you reach the end of the cable. The cable ends and you are free to let go of your grip, and then you fall back to Earth.

If you're ready, reattach your sail.

The sport of parasailing is growing very fast. More than 1 million people participated in parasailing in 2013. It was almost double the number that did so in 2008.

How To

How do I begin base jumping?

Base jumping (also called free-fall Parachuting) allows participants to jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), including bridges, towers and buildings, with no equipment attached. The participant jumps off the object and uses their parachute to land safely. It is similar in nature to skydiving. You don't need a parachute and you don’t need to hold your breath until it opens.

A wingsuit-type base jumper, is the most commonly used. A wingsuit is composed of two pieces of fabric that are sewn together. One piece covers your chest and arms while the other covers your legs. Special boots allow the jumper to stand straight during flight. The jumper pulls the ankle straps tighter during descent. This causes the fabric covering his/her legs to bunch up under his/her body, creating an air pocket. Once the air pocket has grown large enough, the jumper will open his/her parachut and land safely.

Base jumpers can use powered suits in order to accelerate their speed through the air. Powered suits have two main parts: a backpack containing batteries and a jet pack worn under the jumper's clothes. These small rockets fire small jets of hot-gas at high speeds. This creates thrust that propels the leaper forward. These suits can be quite loud and heavy.

BASE jumping can seem intimidating to some people. Make sure you fully understand the risks associated with learning BASE jumping. You can fall off a height, get hit head-on or upside-down, or collide and injure another jumper. Even though BASE jumping is not always dangerous, it can be very dangerous when done incorrectly. Before you attempt to BASE jump, make sure you follow these safety tips.

Start by practicing safe BASE jumping techniques at a lower hill. Be sure to spend a few minutes getting used to the terrain before you jump from a higher one. Pay attention to weather conditions. Avoid jumping when the wind is not blowing in your face. Also, be careful of foggy skies; if you can see more than 10ft ahead of yourself, you might need to wait until the clouds clear. Make sure you have the proper gear. A helmet, goggles, gloves and a full-suit with a harness are all essential. Fourth, have a plan. Ask someone to join you if things go wrong before you leave the ground. Never, ever jump alone. Always have someone to watch over you.
